The intervention occurred in the suburb of Liverpool, where members of the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU) used precision maneuvers to disable two vehicles suspected of being bound for the Bondi area.

The operation unfolded around midday near the intersection of George and Campbell Streets. Eyewitnesses described a “war-zone” atmosphere as unmarked police vehicles rammed a white Hyundai i30 hatchback with Victorian license plates. Officers, equipped with full tactical gear and high-powered rifles, swarmed the vehicle, reportedly deploying rubber bullets to subdue the occupants.

A second vehicle, also with Victorian plates, was intercepted nearby. In total, seven men were detained at the scene. Footage from the area showed the suspects being zip-tied and questioned by investigators from the Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command.

Heightened Security Environment

The operation follows the devastating mass shooting at Bondi Beach on December 14, an event that has left the nation on high alert. NSW Police confirmed that today’s strike was a proactive measure based on specific intelligence.

“Tactical Operations police responded to information received that a violent act was possibly being planned,” a NSW Police spokesperson said in a formal statement. “Police subsequently intercepted two cars in Liverpool. Seven men are currently assisting police with inquiries.”

While the suspects are reportedly known to authorities in Victoria, police have clarified that there is no confirmed operational link at this stage between this group and the perpetrators of Sunday’s attack.

National Response

Following the incident, Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Krissy Barrett signaled that the investigation is far from over.

“In the coming days, the New South Wales Joint Counter Terrorism Team will execute further search warrants to support our investigation,” Commissioner Barrett stated. “There is a lot of material to be examined… to build a more complete picture of the movements and who the alleged offenders had contact with.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been briefed on the arrests. Security remains significantly bolstered across Sydney’s major transport hubs, tourist landmarks, and religious sites as the investigation continues.

Current Status

  • Detentions: Seven men remain in custody; no formal charges have been announced as of Thursday evening.

  • Public Safety: Police have stated there is no immediate ongoing threat to the public following the conclusion of the Liverpool operation.

  • Evidence: Forensic teams are currently processing the intercepted vehicles for weapons and electronic devices.
