HYDERABAD – Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) has issued a powerful condemnation of racism, labeling it a “grave crime against humanity” and a direct assault on India’s constitutional values.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the BRS leader called for the Union Government to enact stringent anti-racism legislation following the tragic death of Anjel Chakma, an MBA student from Tripura who was brutally attacked in Dehradun.
A “Painful Reminder” of Deep-Seated Prejudice
Referring to the killing of the 24-year-old student, KTR stated that the incident serves as a “painful reminder” of how prejudice and the abuse of power can lead to devastating consequences. He warned that such crimes are not isolated incidents but symptoms of a dangerous trend where hatred is becoming normalized.
“India cannot afford this poison,” KTR asserted. “A nation built on unity in diversity cannot survive selective hatred. Justice must be non-negotiable, and racism—whether overt or subtle—must be met with zero tolerance.”
Call for Legislative Action
The BRS leader emphasized that the Government of India has both a moral and constitutional obligation to protect its citizens from racial discrimination. He specifically called for:
-
Unambiguous Laws: New legislation that explicitly criminalizes racist speech, behavior, and incitement.
-
Swift Accountability: Clear provisions for the rapid arrest, prosecution, and punishment of offenders.
-
Institutional Integrity: Strengthening institutions to ensure that accountability is not selective.
“The rule of law must be uncompromising,” KTR added. “When discrimination is allowed to fester, it corrodes our institutions and endangers lives. Safeguarding citizens from racial hatred is a test of the Republic’s commitment to justice and human rights.”
Background of the Case
The outcry follows the death of Anjel Chakma, who was attacked by a group of miscreants with knives and blunt objects in Dehradun on December 9. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries at a hospital.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage and candlelit marches across Delhi and Agartala. To date, Dehradun police have arrested five individuals, including two minors. Authorities are still searching for a sixth suspect, a Nepalese national, for whom a reward of ₹25,000 has been announced.
Moving Beyond Rhetoric
Concluding his statement, KTR urged the Union Government to move beyond mere rhetoric and implement robust legal safeguards. He maintained that “zero tolerance” must become the national standard to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future.
