January 2, 2026: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday launched a blistering attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following a tragic water contamination incident in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Gandhi alleged that the administration’s negligence led to “poison being distributed” instead of water, resulting in multiple deaths and widespread illness.
In a scathing post on social media platform X, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) questioned the accountability of the “double-engine government,” highlighting a pattern of administrative failures across Madhya Pradesh.
“Administration Slept Like Kumbhakarna”
Rahul Gandhi expressed deep grief over the loss of lives in Indore, where sewage water reportedly leaked into drinking water pipelines. He accused the local administration of ignoring repeated warnings from residents.
“In Indore, there was no water—just poison being distributed, while the administration slumbered like Kumbhakarna. Mourning has spread from home to home, the poor are helpless, and to top it off, arrogant statements are coming from BJP leaders,” Gandhi stated.
He further questioned why the water supply wasn’t halted immediately after the first complaints of foul-smelling water surfaced. “People repeatedly complained about the dirty water—yet why was there no heed? How did sewage mix into the drinking water? When will action be taken against the responsible officers?”
MP: The ‘Epicentre of Misgovernance’?
Escalating his attack, Gandhi claimed that Madhya Pradesh has become a symbol of administrative collapse under the BJP’s watch. He cited several recent tragedies to bolster his claim:
-
Cough Syrup Deaths: Alleged fatalities linked to contaminated cough syrup.
-
Hospital Negligence: Reports of children dying in government hospitals due to rat infestations.
-
Indore Tragedy: Deaths caused by sewage-contaminated drinking water.
“These aren’t ‘freebie’ questions; they are demands for accountability. Clean water is a right to life. For the murder of this right, the BJP’s double-engine government is entirely responsible,” Gandhi added.
Silence of the Prime Minister
The Congress leader did not mince words when addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi alleged that the PM consistently remains silent whenever the poor suffer due to government negligence.
“Every time the poor die, Modi ji, as always, remains silent,” he remarked, calling the Prime Minister’s lack of response a “callous” approach to leadership.
Government Response
The Indore tragedy has seen multiple fatalities and dozens of hospitalizations. In response to the growing outrage, the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister has announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased. The state government has also promised free medical treatment for all those affected and has ordered a high-level inquiry into the sewage leakage.
The PingTV Take
The Indore incident has once again brought the spotlight on urban infrastructure and the safety of basic utilities in major Indian cities. As the political slugfest intensifies, the residents of Indore await justice and a permanent solution to the city’s aging water drainage system.
