Manipur Violence 2026

IMPHAL, February 10, 2026 – Fresh ethnic violence has gripped Manipur’s Ukhrul district, specifically the Litan Sareikhong area, leading to the torching of dozens of homes and a total suspension of internet services. The clashes, which erupted between the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities, have forced a massive displacement of villagers as security forces struggle to contain the unrest.

Timeline of the Escalation

The violence reportedly stems from an incident on Saturday, February 7, where a Tangkhul Naga youth, identified as AS Sterling, was allegedly assaulted by a group in Litan village.

  • February 8: Prohibitory orders under Section 163 BNSS were issued after stone-pelting.

  • February 9-10: Armed miscreants set fire to residential properties. While initial reports cited 20 houses, local officials now fear the number has reached 50 homes.

  • Current Status: An indefinite curfew is active; the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and CRPF are on the ground.

Government Response: 5-Day Internet Blackout

To prevent the viral spread of “inflammatory images and hate speech,” the Manipur Home Department has suspended all mobile data and broadband services (including VPN and VSAT) across Ukhrul until February 15, 2026.

“The situation is highly volatile. We have apprehended that anti-social elements may use social media to incite further communal passion,” stated the official government order.

Humanitarian Impact and Displacement

Hundreds of residents—primarily women, children, and the elderly—have fled Litan for safer zones in Kangpokpi and other parts of Ukhrul.

  • Casualties: No fatalities are confirmed, but several injuries from gunfire and stone-pelting are being treated at RIMS Imphal.

  • Property Damage: Reports indicate at least 21 Tangkhul houses and 3 Kuki houses were targeted in the initial wave of arson.

Political Reactions

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has appealed for restraint, while Deputy CM Losii Dikho is reportedly camping in the region to facilitate peace talks between the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) and Kuki village chiefs.
