New Delhi: In a major setback for the defending champions, Indiaโs explosive opening batter Abhishek Sharma has been hospitalised in Delhi due to a severe stomach infection. The 25-year-old southpaw is now almost certain to miss Indiaโs second Group A fixture against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday, February 12.
Hospitalisation and Medical Status
According to BCCI sources cited by PTI, Abhishek has been under medical supervision at a private facility for the past 48 hours. “Abhishek has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi due to a stomach infection. Some tests are being done to ascertain the problem. It is still not clear whether he will be discharged today. But the match against Namibia looks doubtful as of now,” a BCCI source confirmed.
The infection reportedly began surfacing before Indiaโs tournament opener against the USA on February 8. Despite a high fever, the young star took the field but was dismissed for a golden duck. His condition worsened post-match, leading to his admission on Monday.
Team Indiaโs Mounting Fitness Concerns
Abhishekโs illness adds to a growing list of concerns for captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir. While the team is hopeful for his return by the high-octane clash against Pakistan on February 15, the immediate focus is on finding a replacement at the top of the order.
Sanju Samson to Open? With Abhishek likely out, Sanju Samsonโwho acted as a substitute fielder in the first gameโis the frontrunner to partner Ishan Kishan at the top.
Bumrahโs Return: On a brighter note, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is expected to return to the XI after missing the USA game with viral fever.
Washington Sundar: The all-rounder has rejoined the squad in Delhi following a side strain and is back in training.
Impact on Indiaโs T20 World Cup Campaign
Abhishek Sharma has been a pillar of India’s aggressive “new-age” T20 strategy, boasting a strike rate of over 150. His absence disrupts a settled opening pair that was key to Indiaโs title defense. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate noted that while the team remains “cautiously optimistic,” they will not risk the youngster’s long-term health given the long tournament ahead.
