Osmania University Student Protest

HYDERABAD, February 12, 2026 – A wave of student unrest has hit the prestigious Osmania University (OU) following allegations that hostel authorities mistreated and humiliated a student’s mother, sparking a massive overnight demonstration that spilled onto the city’s main roads on Thursday morning.

The Incident: Late-Night Crisis at Women’s Hostel

The tension began late on February 11, 2026, when a mother arrived at the OU women’s hostel to visit her daughter. Given the late hour and the difficulty of finding safe travel or accommodation, the student requested that her mother be allowed to stay overnight.

According to eyewitnesses and viral social media footage, hostel staff summarily rejected the plea, citing strict “no-visitor” overnight policies. The situation escalated when staff reportedly spoke to the mother in a “harsh and insensitive” manner, ordering her to leave the premises immediately despite her concerns for safety.

“The question was simple: where is a woman supposed to go alone in the middle of the night? The lack of empathy from the administration is what turned a policy issue into a human rights issue,” said one protesting student.

Midnight Slogans and Morning Blockades

As news of the alleged humiliation spread, hundreds of students gathered under the hostel trees on Wednesday night. Using phone flashlights to pierce the darkness, students raised slogans demanding an immediate apology and accountability.

By the morning of February 12, the protest shifted to the university’s main thoroughfare. A peaceful sit-in demonstration partially blocked traffic as students chanted “We want justice.” Key Student Demands Include:

  • Immediate suspension of the staff involved in the incident.

  • A formal inquiry into the conduct of the Hostel Director.

  • Reform of “rigid and inhuman” visitor policies for emergency situations.

  • Addressal of long-standing grievances regarding food quality and campus lighting.

A History of Administrative Friction

Osmania University, one of India’s most historic institutions, has seen recurring friction between students and the administration. While the state government has recently funneled funds into infrastructure, students argue that the “human element” is missing. Issues ranging from insects found in hostel meals to inadequate security have plagued the campus over the last two years.

Current Status

As of Thursday morning, Osmania University authorities have yet to issue an official statement. While police remain on-site to monitor the peaceful demonstration, students have vowed not to budge until concrete action is taken against the responsible staff.
