HYDERABAD, February 13, 2026 — In a major push toward sustainable urban mobility, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has unveiled its roadmap to operate 2,800 electric buses within Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits by 2027. This ambitious “Clean and Green Hyderabad” initiative aims to eliminate diesel emissions, modernize public transit, and position Telangana as a leader in India’s EV transition.

Pioneering Retrofitting and Fleet Expansion

The transformation is being led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s government, focusing on both new inductions and innovative cost-saving measures. Notably, TGSRTC has become the first state-run corporation in India to implement large-scale retrofitting, converting existing diesel buses into electric vehicles.

  • Current Progress: As of early 2026, approximately 325 electric buses are active across six depots.

  • Near-term Goal: An additional 175 buses are expected by the end of the first quarter, bringing the total fleet to 500 e-buses.

  • Recent Milestone: In late 2025, 65 new low-floor electric buses were flagged off at the Ranigunj Depot. These Olectra X2 models feature:

    • Advanced Safety: Fire detection/suppression systems and CCTV.

    • Commuter Comfort: USB charging ports, digital displays, and audio announcements.

    • Accessibility: Kneeling mechanisms and ramps for elderly and disabled passengers.

Infrastructure: Powering the Future

To support 2,800 buses, TGSRTC is collaborating with the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) on a massive infrastructure rollout.

Key Infrastructure Detail Target/Value
Total Investment ₹392 Crore
Power Requirement 124 MW
High-Tension (HT) Charging Stations 25 in Greater Hyderabad
New Dedicated EV Depots 10 New Depots
Upgraded Existing Depots 19 Depots
Regional Stations Suryapet (2), Sangareddy (1), Nalgonda (1)

The “Green Fee”: Funding the Shift

To finance this ₹392 crore infrastructure push, the state implemented a modest “Green Fee” fare hike in October 2025.

  • City Ordinary & Metro Express: Fares increased by ₹5 for the first three stages and ₹10 thereafter.

  • E-Metro AC Services: A ₹5 hike for the first stage and ₹10 for subsequent stages.

This revenue stream ensures the project remains financially viable while the state navigates policy discussions regarding the PM E-DRIVE scheme. While the central government typically supports standard Gross Cost Contracts (GCC), Telangana is advocating for a Hybrid Model to protect TGSRTC jobs by retaining operations and maintenance in-house.

Environmental and Social Impact

The shift to a zero-emission fleet is expected to significantly improve Hyderabad’s Air Quality Index (AQI), reducing the incidence of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases linked to diesel exhaust. Beyond health, the quieter, vibration-free electric rides offer a premium experience, encouraging citizens to choose public transport over private cars, thereby easing the city’s growing traffic congestion.

“The electric bus initiative is a revolutionary step toward a pollution-free Hyderabad. We urge the public to join us in this green journey,” stated a TGSRTC spokesperson.

With tenders already awarded to firms like Sai Green Mobility and Kalyani Powertrain Limited for the initial retrofitting batches, the “Green Revolution” on Hyderabad’s streets is no longer a distant dream—it is a reality in motion.
