MYMENSINGH, BANGLADESH– Senior law enforcement officials in Bangladesh have revealed that the brutal mob lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old Hindu garment worker, might have been prevented had bystanders or factory officials alerted the authorities immediately as tensions began to escalate.

The incident, which took place on the night of Thursday, December 18, 2025, has sparked nationwide outrage and intensified concerns regarding the safety of religious minorities during the country’s current period of political transition.

The Fatal Delay

In a detailed briefing following the incident, police officials noted that the confrontation at the Pioneer Knit Composite Factory in Bhaluka Upazila began significantly earlier than the actual time of death. Investigators believe there was a “critical window” of nearly an hour where intervention could have dispersed the crowd.

“Our preliminary findings suggest that the allegations against the youth were being discussed and tensions were brewing long before the violence turned fatal,” a senior police official stated. “Had there been a timely call to the local police or the emergency helpline when the first signs of agitation appeared, we could have secured the area. Just one timely call could have saved Dipu’s life.”

Sequence of Events

According to local reports and police statements:

  • The Accusation: Dipu was falsely accused of making derogatory remarks on social media by a coworker following a trivial dispute.

  • The Escalation: An agitated mob gathered outside the factory premises around 9:00 PM. Witnesses report that Dipu was initially pushed out of the factory gates, where he was immediately surrounded.

  • The Violence: The victim was beaten to death, after which his body was tied to a tree and set on fire near the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

While some reports, including statements from activist Taslima Nasreen, suggest Dipu may have been in police custody momentarily before being overtaken by the mob, the Mymensingh police have emphasized that the sheer speed of the mob’s growth—aided by the delay in reporting—made the situation uncontrollable by the time the first responders arrived.

Investigation and Arrests

As of Sunday, December 21, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Bangladesh Police have arrested 12 individuals in connection with the murder. The Chief Adviser of the Interim Government, Muhammad Yunus, condemned the act in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), asserting that “perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared.”

Notably, investigators from RAB-14 have confirmed that no evidence has been found to support the blasphemy allegations. “We checked the deceased’s social media and interviewed coworkers; there is no record of him posting anything that would hurt religious sentiments,” said Md. Samsuzzaman, a company commander for RAB-14.

A Community in Mourning

Dipu Chandra Das was the sole breadwinner for his family, supporting his disabled father, mother, wife, and infant child. His father, Ravilal Das, described the horror of learning about his son’s death through social media videos before being contacted by authorities.

The incident has drawn international condemnation, with human rights groups and political leaders in neighboring India urging the interim government to ensure the protection of minorities and uphold the rule of law.
