HYDERABAD, February 12, 2026 – The Hyderabad Traffic Police have announced a massive, continuous enforcement drive targeting motorists without a valid Driving Licence (DL). Beginning March 1, 2026, the city will see intensified checks at major junctions to curb rising road accidents attributed to untrained drivers.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), D. Joel Davis, IPS, issued an urgent advisory on Thursday, emphasizing that carrying a physical or digital DL is now “non-negotiable” for all commuters.

Key Deadlines & Enforcement Details

Category Information
Launch Date March 1, 2026
Target Area All Hyderabad City Police Limits
Primary Focus Driving without a valid DL (Section 181 MV Act)
Penalty Risk Heavy fines, vehicle impoundment, and legal action

Why the Sudden Crackdown?

Official data from the Hyderabad City Police reveals a disturbing trend: a significant majority of fatal road accidents in the city involve individuals driving without a legal permit. Authorities believe that strict enforcement will not only improve road discipline but also significantly reduce preventable deaths on busy corridors like the Banjara Hills, Madhapur, and Secunderabad stretches.

Secondary Penalties: A Warning to Vehicle Owners

The 2026 crackdown isn’t just for the person behind the wheel. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, vehicle owners who allow unlicensed individuals (including minors) to operate their vehicles will face:

  • Criminal Liability: Owners can be booked for “permitting the offence.”

  • Insurance Rejection: In the event of a crash, insurance providers are legally entitled to reject claims if the driver was unlicensed. This could lead to massive out-of-pocket financial settlements for the owner.

How to Stay Compliant

If you do not currently hold a valid licence, the Traffic Police urge you to:

  1. Apply Immediately: Visit the nearest Road Transport Authority (RTA) office or the official RTA portal.

  2. Digital Documents: While physical licences are preferred, valid digital versions on government-approved apps (like DigiLocker or mParivahan) are generally accepted during checks.

  3. Carry it Always: Ensure your licence is in your possession every time you operate a motor vehicle.

Public Safety Appeal

“Strict adherence to traffic rules is the only way to ensure safer roads for everyone,” stated Jt. CP D. Joel Davis. The department has appealed for full public cooperation as they aim to make Hyderabad’s streets a model for urban road safety in India.
