KCR phone tapping case SIT notice

Hyderabad | January 29, 2026 – Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) President and former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) has officially responded to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) notice in the high-profile phone tapping case.

Citing his role in the upcoming Telangana Municipal Elections, the BRS chief has requested a rescheduling of his appearance, while emphasizing his status as a senior citizen under the law.

The SIT, which is investigating allegations of unauthorized phone surveillance during the previous BRS regime, served the notice at KCR’s Nandigiri residence in Hyderabad on Thursday. The notice directed him to appear for questioning on January 30, 2026, at 3 PM.

In a formal response, KCR highlighted two critical points:

  1. Election Preoccupation: January 30 marks the final day for filing nominations for 123 urban local bodies (including 116 municipalities and 7 corporations). KCR stated that as party president, he is busy authorizing candidates and cannot attend the session.

  2. Legal Protections (CrPC 160): Given he is over 65 years old, KCR cited the Section 160 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which mandates that senior citizens be examined at their place of residence. He requested that future sessions be conducted at his Erravalli farmhouse in Siddipet.

“As a former Chief Minister and the current Leader of Opposition, I assure full cooperation with the investigation,” KCR stated in his reply.

Political Firestorm Ahead of Municipal Polls

The timing of the notice has triggered a fresh war of words between the BRS and the ruling Congress government.

  • BRS Allegations: Leaders like K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) and MLC K. Kavitha have branded the move “politics of vendetta.” They argue the Congress is using investigative agencies to distract voters just days before the municipal elections.

  • Congress Stand: The government maintains that the SIT is an independent body and the probe is progressing based on evidence unearthed since the case was registered in March 2024.

The Core of the Case

The scandal involves claims that the Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) monitored the communications of opposition leaders, journalists, and businessmen without legal authorization. Several top police officials have already been questioned, and KCR’s family members, including KTR and T. Harish Rao, have appeared before the SIT in recent weeks.
