Kerala Wedding Held in Hospital Emergency Ward After Bride's Accident

Kochi, Kerala – In an extraordinary display of commitment, a private hospital’s emergency department in Kochi, Kerala, became a unique wedding venue on Friday as a groom married his bride, who was recovering from severe injuries sustained in a road accident just hours before the scheduled ceremony.

The rare and moving event, which has garnered widespread attention, saw V. M. Sharon of Thumboli, an assistant professor, tie the knot with Avani J of Kommadi, Alappuzha, a schoolteacher, exactly at the pre-determined auspicious time (muhurtam).


Tragedy Strikes on the Wedding Morning

 

The wedding of Avani and Sharon was originally scheduled to take place at a venue in Thumboli around noon on Friday.

However, fate took a cruel turn early in the morning, around 3:00 AM. Avani, along with two relatives, was traveling to Kumarakom for her bridal makeup when the car they were in lost control and rammed into a tree.

The injured were initially rushed to Kottayam Medical College. Due to the severity of her injuries, particularly a spinal injury, Avani was later transferred around noon to VPS Lakeshore Hospital in Ernakulam for specialized treatment.


Unwavering Commitment to the ‘Muhurtam’

 

Groom Sharon and his family arrived at the hospital shortly after learning about the accident and the seriousness of Avani’s condition.

Despite the shock and chaos, both families were determined not to miss the auspicious time (muhurtam), which was fixed between 12:15 PM and 12:30 PM. They approached the hospital authorities with a heartfelt request to allow the ceremony to proceed immediately within the hospital premises.

After consulting with the medical team, the hospital management agreed on humanitarian grounds, transforming a section of the Emergency Department into a makeshift wedding setting. The primary focus was ensuring that Avani was not subjected to any additional discomfort during the ritual.


A Vow of ‘In Sickness and in Health’

 

Surrounded by a handful of close relatives, as well as doctors and healthcare staff who acted as unexpected witnesses, Sharon tied the ‘thaali’ (sacred yellow thread) around Avani’s neck. The ceremony was brief, emotionally charged, and completed precisely within the designated time window, all while Avani lay on the hospital stretcher.

Dr. Sudheesh Karunakaran, Head of Neurosurgery at the hospital, confirmed that Avani had sustained a serious spinal injury and was scheduled to undergo surgery soon. He described the patient’s condition as stable.

The groom, Sharon, emphasized that the focus now was entirely on Avani’s recovery, showcasing a profound commitment to his new wife in the most challenging circumstances. Meanwhile, guests who had already arrived at the original wedding venue were reportedly served the planned wedding feast, turning it into a symbolic celebration of the union.

The story has resonated deeply with the public, with many calling it a true and inspiring example of the wedding vow to stay together “in sickness and in health.”
