PM Modi and UK PM Keir Starmer hold wide-ranging talks on trade, defence, and critical technology, agreeing on enhanced military cooperation
MUMBAI: (Oct 9) Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced today that India and the UK are natural allies. He said their partnership is now essential for both world stability and economic development.
Modi’s comments followed detailed discussions with the UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, who is visiting India. PM Modi stressed that the relationship is built on shared values like democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.
Speaking after the meeting, PM Starmer called the relationship “special.” He added, “We are building a new, modern partnership focused on the future,” and praised India’s impressive growth.
Key Agreements:
- The leaders agreed to cooperate on military training.
- PM Modi committed to improving sea security with the UK in the Indo-Pacific region.
The main topics of the discussion were increasing ties in trade, defence, security, and advanced technology.
Regarding the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, Modi stated that India supports finding peace through talks and diplomatic efforts.
PM Starmer arrived in Mumbai yesterday for a two-day visit, bringing a large group of 125 top UK business, entrepreneur, and education leaders.
This visit happens two and a half months after the two countries signed a major Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in July. This deal will make trade easier, reduce taxes on goods (tariffs), and is expected to double the trade between India and the UK by 2030.
