New Delhi: A Delhi court on Thursday, December 11, 2025, granted two weeks of interim bail to former JNU student leader Umar Khalid, who is an accused in the larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 Delhi riots. The bail has been granted to allow him to attend his sister’s wedding.

Duration: The interim bail is effective from December 16 to December 29, 2025.

Case: Khalid is an accused in the case lodged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for allegedly being one of the “masterminds” of the February 2020 riots in the national capital.

Court Order: Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of the Karkardooma Court granted the temporary relief. The court noted that the marriage is of the applicant’s real sister.

Surrender Date: Khalid has been directed to surrender before the Superintendent of the concerned jail on the evening of December 29, after the expiry of the interim bail period.
Strict Bail Conditions
The court imposed strict conditions while granting the interim bail to the jailed activist:

Bail Bond: Khalid must furnish a personal bond of ₹20,000 and two sureties of the same amount.

Social Media Restriction: He is barred from using social media during the bail period.

Contact Restriction: He is restricted from contacting any witnesses or tampering with evidence.

Location Restriction: He is directed to remain at his residence or at the venues of the wedding ceremonies as specified by him.

Interaction: He is only permitted to meet his family members, relatives, and friends.
Background of the Case
Umar Khalid was arrested in September 2020. The Delhi riots, which coincided with widespread protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), resulted in 53 deaths and over 700 injuries.

His counsel mentioned that he had previously been granted interim bail two times (in 2022 and 2024 for family weddings) and did not misuse the liberty.

The interim bail order comes shortly after the Supreme Court reserved its verdict on the regular bail pleas of Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and others in the UAPA case on December 10. The accused have challenged the Delhi High Court’s order of September 2, which denied them bail.
