Mumbai: October 25, 2025 – Veteran Bollywood and television actor Satish Shah, widely celebrated for his impeccable comic timing and memorable roles, passed away on Saturday at the age of 74. The actor, best known for his iconic portrayal of the witty patriarch Indravadhan Sarabhai in the hit sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, had been battling kidney-related complications.
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit was among the first to confirm the heartbreaking news on social media, stating that Shah succumbed to kidney failure. Reports indicate that the actor was found unresponsive at his residence and was rushed to P.D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre in Mumbai, where he could not be revived despite medical efforts, as per a statement released by the hospital.
A Legacy of Laughter and Iconic Roles
Born on June 25, 1951, Satish Shah leaves behind a prolific body of work spanning over four decades in Indian cinema and television. An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), he was a versatile performer who effortlessly switched between comedy and serious roles.
His breakthrough performance came with Kundan Shah’s 1983 cult classic film, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, where his character, Municipal Commissioner D’Mello, who spends most of the film as a dead body, became one of the most iconic comedic roles in Indian cinema history.
Shah became a household name across generations through his successful stint in television. After starring in popular shows like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, he achieved enduring fame as the teasing, quick-witted Indravadhan Sarabhai in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. His on-screen chemistry with co-star Ratna Pathak Shah, who played his high-society wife Maya, was legendary and continues to be adored by fans.
On the silver screen, he was a familiar face in numerous blockbusters, often playing key supporting and comedic roles in films like:

Sarabhai vs Sarabhai co-star Rajesh Kumar, who played his son Rosesh, expressed his grief, calling it a huge personal loss.
Satish Shah is survived by his wife, designer Madhu Shah. His final rites are expected to be held on Sunday. The actor’s indelible contribution to comedy and his ability to bring joy to millions will ensure his memory remains cherished forever.
